Do you know anyone between the ages of 5-17 that loves to cook or BBQ? Have a parent or guardian register them for the Kids Q Competition at Lake El Reno on July 27th!
KIDS Q RULES
Canadian County CASA’s All Fired Up for Kids BBQ Contest presents the 2018 KIDS Q:
This event will challenge the next generation of BBQ competitors to practice and refine their BBQ talent.
Each team will consist of no more than three individuals and one supervisor over 18 years of age. Teams will compete by age in one of the two age divisions: 5-12, and 13-17.
All team members must be in the same age division. Rules state that an adult (at least 18 years old) must accompany the children, but the children must do all of the preparation, seasoning and cooking on their own. If boning or sectioning of meat is required, an adult may help in the boning or sectioning of the meat only.
Judges will award prizes for 1st to 3rd places in each age division for this event.
Each team will be provided with a BBQ charcoal grill, charcoal, meat for their division, and competition space.
Kids Q entries – Ground beef (5-12 division); Chicken Thighs (13-17 division). Entries will be judged on (1) Appearance; (2) Taste; and (3) Tenderness.
Awards in each age division:
o 1st - $50 / Ribbon
o 2nd - $25 / Ribbon
o 3rd - $15 / Ribbon
Rules and Regulations:
o No motorized vehicles will be allowed in the competition area
o Competitors will have a Cook’s meeting at 3:30 p.m., Friday, July 27 at the small pavilion by the RV park at Lake El Reno. This meeting is mandatory.
o Entry fee to participate in the Kids Q is $25 per team. Deadline is July 23 to enter.
o Each team will receive one (1) 9”x 9” Styrofoam judging container for turn-in.
o Team participants must all be in the same age division.
o An adult over the age of 18 must be present on site at all times, from set-up to tear down for each participating team. Any team not under adult supervision will be disqualified.
o All BBQ grills will be lit by a KIDS Q official only.
o Teams MUST use provided grills and charcoal. Items such as seasonings, rubs, tools, etc. are the responsibility of the teams. Each team MUST use the provided meat for their age division. Teams will turn in at least six (6) pieces of their cooked entry, using the provided numbered Styrofoam judging container. Entry must fit in the 9” x 9” provided Styrofoam container.
o Each team will be assigned a cooking space and is asked to keep their equipment (i.e., grill, chairs, ice chest, BBQ tools) within their designated area.
o A mandatory “Cook’s Meeting” will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, July 27. All teams and team members must be present to compete.
o Teams must clean, prepare, and cook their entry at their assigned cooking site and meat must be held on ice at a temperature of 40 degrees or less prior to cooking. Meat and produce ingredients must be held in separate coolers.
o 9” x 9” Styrofoam turn-in containers will be provided to each team at the 3:30 p.m. Cooks Meeting.
o Competition is open to KCBS and non-KCBS members. Teams DO NOT have to be associated with a Canadian County CASA’s All Fired Up for Kids BBQ team.
o Team participants must do all preparation, seasoning and cooking of their entry. The supervising adult may only assist in the sectioning of the meat and any emergencies with the lit or hot BBQ grills. Adult participation outside of these boundaries will cause the entire team to be disqualified.
o The official turn in time will be 6:25 – 6:35 p.m. No late entries will be accepted.
o Teams must hold their cooked items at a temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit or higher until turn in.
o Each team must turn in a minimum of six (6) pieces of their cooked entry in the numbered container with garnish. Only the entry and garnish are allowed in the turn-in box.
o The judging for this event will be in accordance with Kansas City BBQ Society judging procedures to ensure the integrity of the event. All decisions by the judges are final. Awards will be presented for 1st – 3rd places in each age division at approximately 8 p.m. at the small pavilion near the RV park at Lake El Reno.
o Judging scores will be tabulated in accordance with KCBS judging procedures on appearance, taste, and tenderness.
o Each team is responsible for the cleanup of their assigned cooking area, gray water disposal, and trash and hot ash disposal in designated containers placed within the Kids Q area.
o Failure to follow any of these rules will be cause for disqualification of the team.
o Each team is expected to HAVE A GREAT TIME!
